In the event of a flood safety must be your main concern. Turn off electrical breakers in areas that have suffered the water damage as long as it is safe to do so. Know where your shut off taps are located in case you have a pipe break or leak. Shut off the source of the water as soon as possible.

If the water is from a fresh water source quickly pick up valuables like photo albums and books that you do not want to lose. If the flood source originates from the sewer system be very cautious to avoid contact and also do not cross contaminate other areas by walking in and out of the contaminated areas.

Do not stack wet items on dry just to get them off the floor. Have the area dried within a few days or you may have mould beginning to grow.
